Privileges
We always say that we are figli d’arte – arte meaning guild.
Not just of one, and not always the same. According to the times, we gravitated towards the one with the greatest political clout: wool in the Fourteenth-Fifteenth centuries; silk in the Fifteenth-Sixteenth. In the depth of our souls we are still silk merchants.
I hear an objection: ‘Should you not rather say vintners, given your present activity?’. A legitimate criticism; indeed, an illustrious Florentine lineage, famous worldwide for its wines, brags about one of its ancestors’ haven been a member of the Vintners Guild. For publicity reasons, this may work; besides, it relies on the general public’s ignorance of Florentine history, since the aforesaid ancestor was, by all means, the black sheep of the family: the vintners were part of a Minor Guild and thus denied most chances for political advancement. Unlike those involved in wool or silk, who instead had ample possibilities.
‘Right, right’ The above expert could comment ‘However, the family you mentioned at least has a historical precedent in its favour’. Ah, what a pure soul, who forgets the wiles of the Florentines of old. There was more than a way for someone who, in theory, belonged to a Minor Guild to enter a Major one. Take for example the armourers: quite a number of the latter where in the Silk Guild, with the excuse that cuirasses were often lined with velvet. We are not different, for our wine is like silk; rough, yet soft when raw; shiny and velvety when refined. Try it for yourself.
For this reason, we rightfully take our place in the Silk Guild, inviting you to join this this silken-enoic concert of ours. Keeping with tradition, we have revived the three ranks of the ancient Florentine guilds: apprentice, journeyman and master. There also existed the rank of Grand Master, but that was a tongue-in-cheek title given to heavy-weight politicians. Maybe, after a few glasses of Villa Calcinaia, you may believe to be the reincarnation of Lorenzo de’ Medici.
